Love My London: an insight into the UK capital from second generation African and West Indian heritages

Soneni (lead singer/songwriter of Soneni & The Soul) is of Zimbabwean - and ancestrally Zulu - heritage, however was born and grew up in London. In turn she makes references to detrimental impact of colonialism, while still admitting she’s “still grateful my parents chose this.. Land where opportunities are hard to miss like Mayweather’s fist”. Comfort (British born, of Jamaican descent) rhymes about how a “one day travel card costs more than minimum wage” and Alim Kamara (British born, of Sierra Leone descent) gets lyrical about his love for “refugees who snuck into get some”. But that isn’t it… Throughout the track, each artist brings their own unique flavour and approach making this a very interesting musical journey. Drawing on their hip-hop influences to create a backdrop that allows Soneni, Leroy Rose, Ms KG, Tshaka Campbell, Comfort and Alim Kamara to address the issues and cultural/economical divides that exist in the UK’s capital city.
